Wairarapa College has undergone a thoughtful and integrated programme of development that strengthens learning outcomes while respecting the school’s heritage and celebrating its diverse community. Stephenson and Turner has worked closely with the Ministry of Education and Wairarapa College as the Lead Design Consultants to deliver a suite of connected projects that support inclusive, future ready education.
The Tahu Hospitality and Food Technology Hub provides a purpose built Level 3 hospitality teaching facility that supports contemporary learning and real world skills. The building includes a fully equipped commercial kitchen, dedicated food technology spaces, flexible learning areas and supporting staff and amenity spaces. Positioned alongside the historic Sutherland Block, the design creates a planted courtyard that provides natural light to both buildings whilst supporting passive ventilation. Internal timber finishes and large opening doors encourage a strong connection between learning spaces and the outdoors, while the centrally located canteen acts as a social heart for students and staff. A restrained palette of dark metal cladding sits confidently alongside the heritage brickwork, creating a clear but respectful architectural contrast.
Whare Āwhina, the Supported Learning Centre, provides a welcoming and secure environment where students can learn at their own pace. The building is organised around a range of learning and breakout spaces that support both group activity and quiet retreat. Carefully considered proportions, lighting and colour create spaces that feel calm, dignified and adaptable. Locating Whare Āwhina at the front of the school affirms the value of inclusion and celebrates the diversity of the Wairarapa College community.
The refurbishment of the Sutherland Block ensures the long term future of one of the school’s most significant heritage buildings. Earthquake strengthening and modern services have transformed the interior into safe and inspiring learning spaces, while the the carefully restored façade preserves its historic character. New glazed connections link the building with adjacent facilities, creating a cohesive campus that weaves together the school’s past, present, and future.
