Stephenson and Turner partnered with the Ministry of Education and Hornby High School’s Senior Leadership Team to deliver a comprehensive redevelopment, transforming the school’s outdated facilities to support its rapidly expanding roll. The master plan envisioned an almost entirely new campus, with provisions for future expansion, providing a dynamic and adaptable learning environment.
The design introduced new administration and specialist spaces alongside three innovative learning environments, each connected by a ‘learning street’ to foster collaboration and flexibility. Prioritising educational architecture design, S&T created a simple yet purposeful exterior form that accommodates Hornby High’s modern curriculum while enhancing functionality for students and staff.
Beyond improving learning outcomes, the new buildings significantly enhance energy efficiency and comfort. Features such as insulated roofing panels, double glazing, and an innovative underfloor heating system allows a warmer, drier, and quieter school environment—far superior to the outdated structures they replaced.
Early in 2023, S&T was invited back to design and document the fourth Kahui, continuing the journey of sustainable school design and reinforcing our commitment to creating future-focused educational spaces in New Zealand.
