S&T is proud to have been involved in a series of projects to preserve and enhance the heritage listed AMP Building in Wellington. Our work spans from the renewal of the Sydney sandstone façade around 20 years ago to the installation of a new contemporary glazed wind lobby and accessible lift provisions, to more recent seismic upgrade and interior upgrades.
Through this ongoing engagement, we have helped uncover and restore significant heritage elements, including the original coffered and vaulted ceilings, polished terrazzo staircases, and decorative marble friezes. These elements, along with beautiful original floors and oak-panelled doors, have been carefully preserved to celebrate the building’s rich history. We’ve also increased the lettable floor area by carefully hanging a mezzanine floor into parts of the double-height ground floor.
A frameless glass screen has replaced an unsympathetic 1980s addition halfway up the entrance stairs, which now provides visitors with an uninterrupted view of the heritage entrance interior whilst enhancing security requirements.
This new screen enables the interior to become part of the street and vice versa, allowing passersby to fully appreciate this glorious space.
In recognition of this work, in 2006, the AMP Building’s entry was awarded the overall winner of the Metro Glass Awards, showcasing the success of merging heritage conservation with modern architecture.
Since then, we’ve undertaken a base building interior upgrade along with fitouts for tenants on selected floors.
This project exemplifies the delicate balance of preserving architectural heritage while incorporating modern solutions that serve both the building’s historical value and its ongoing functionality.
