The project focused on earthquake strengthening and modernisation, delivering a safe, contemporary learning environment for ākonga and kaiako. Extensive works included:
Demolition of the rear façade and internal corridor.
Excavation to 1.5 metres below ground for a new concrete raft slab.
Integration of a skeletal steel bracing system for seismic resilience.
Construction of new glazed walkways connecting to the Tahu Hospitality & Food Technology Hub.
The original heritage façade was carefully restored featuring sealed brickwork, new plaster renders and rainwater systems, all finished in council-approved heritage colours that honour the building’s historic character. Inside, the building now features state-of-the-art heating, lighting, acoustic treatments, and flooring, creating inspiring spaces designed for the next century.
The Sutherland Block joins a suite of innovative facilities at Wairarapa College, including the Whare Āwhina Supported Learning Centre and the Tahu Hospitality & Food Technology Hub—all proudly delivered by Stephenson & Turner.
